First Continua certified patient monitor

  • 3 February 2009

International telehealth and personal health system interoperability group, Continua Health Alliance, has announced the launch of the first Continua-certified patient monitor.

The device from Nonin Medical is a handheld pulse oximeter with USB, 2500 PalmSAT. Nonin says it plans to offer Continua certified tools across its product lines.

After two years of work from more than 175 companies around the world, Continua Health Alliance has formally released its Version One Design Guidelines and the Continua Certification Program.

These guidelines encompass USB and Bluetooth connectivity for vital sign devices – such as pulse oximeters, blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, weight scales and glucose meters – together with cardiovascular fitness equipment and independent living activity monitors.

"I’m proud to welcome the first Continua Certified product to the global marketplace from industry leader and Continua Promoter member Nonin Medical," said David Whitlinger, Continua Health Alliance president.

In addition to the Continua Version One Design Guidelines, Continua also provides its members with a large library of reference software that represent all of the connectivity interfaces in Version One.

Over the next 12 months the Continua Alliance will run international summits in Tokyo and Barcelona. These summits give Continua members the opportunity to network during face-to-face working group meetings. These events also include keynotes delivered by industry thought leaders, product demos, networking activities, and updates on recent accomplishments and roadmaps.
