Health tech firm X-on Health has integrated its Surgery Connect cloud telephony solution with the Medicus electronic patient record (EPR) platform for primary care.

Medicus, which launched in May 2025, is the first new core GP system in England in more than 25 years and was the first supplier to be assured through NHSE’s Tech Innovation Framework.

Previously, GP practices in England largely had a choice of  just Optum and TPP as their IT suppliers to manage patient care.

The integration with X-on Health provides users with access to patient lookup and click-to-call functionality within the Medicus interface, with the intention of removing the need for third-party overlays or manual data entry.

Tim Gray, chief product officer at Medicus, said: “This integration is a prime example of why ‘native’ is better.

“Practices need their front door channels to be tightly integrated with the EPR that powers their clinical workflows and technology that ‘just works’.

It’s been amazing to see the hard work of our teams receive positive feedback from the practices we all work so hard for.”  

The first GP practice started making calls through the integrated system on 11 December 2025.

It is intended to eliminate friction between phone systems and clinical records, as general practice faces increasing pressure to optimise resources.

Through the partnership with X-on Health, ambient voice functionality has been made available at scale, supporting GP practices and integrated care boards looking to modernise workflows in line with NHSE’s digital transformation ambitions.

In May 2025, TORTUS and X-on Health announced that clinical AI assistants will be made available to GP practices across the UK through a strategic partnership.

TORTUS’ Surgery Intellect ambient voice technology (AVT) listens to face-to-face and telephone consultations and automatically generates clinical notes, referral letters, clinical coding, and administrative tasks in real-time.

It is available to all GP practices regardless of their existing telephony provider, with additional benefits available to existing customers of X-on Health’s Surgery Connect.

In October 2025, Dr Alec Price-Forbes, national chief clinical information officer for England, announced that NHSE is developing a national AVT supplier registry with the aim of ensuring safety, interoperability and information governance standards for suppliers.
