Barts Health rolls out Cynerio cyber security platform

Barts Health NHS Trust has rolled out Cynerio’s healthcare-focused cyber security platform across all of its sites and strengthen its defences against the threat of cyber attacks.

The trust selected Cynerio’s full suite in January 2024 and procured it in March 2024, with the platform now fully deployed across St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Royal London Hospital.

Cynerio’s platform is designed to continuously monitor, detect and mitigate cyber security threats to medical and Internet of Things (IoT) devices within healthcare environments to provide a strong defence against emerging cyber risks.

Barts Health hopes to minimise common risks faced by healthcare providers, including data breaches, ransomware incidents and other malicious attacks.

Within one month, the platform has identified more than 9,500 previously unmonitored devices at the trust, which are now monitored, analysed and secured in real-time by staff at the trust working in conjunction with the Cynerio Customer Success team.

Ian Lyon, ICT network and security manager at Barts Health NHS Trust, said: “The ease that we have been able to deploy Cynerio at our two primary data centres and start getting day one value has been amazing and is quickly becoming a valuable tool in our cyber security tooling.”

The full Cynerio suite includes Network Detection and Response for Healthcare (NDR-H) technology designed to monitor network traffic and detect and respond to threats.

NDR-H sits within the hospital’s network and monitors traffic without interfering with traffic flow, identifying unusual traffic, performing analysis, and alerting team members to potential attacks that could impact their ability to provide care.

Cynerio’s technology enables strategic adoption of proven approaches commonly missing from healthcare environments, including day-one attack detection, microsegmentation, proactive patching and clear guidance for healthcare staff.

Last year, Barts Health NHS Trust appeared on the dark web victim blog of Russian ransomware gang BlackCat, who claimed to have stolen over seven TB of sensitive data in a cyber attack. However, there was no evidence at the time to suggest an attack took place.

Cynerio was also selected by Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System (ICS) in March 2024, who signed an 18-month contract to roll out the full platform on a phased basis at 14 NHS organisations within the ICS.
