Cerner completes first Spanish roll-out

  • 28 October 2009

US healthcare IT giant Cerner has completed the first implementation of Cerner Millennium in Spain.

Hospital de Denia Marina Salud, on the East coast of Spain, went live with the electronic medical record across the whole hospital and some associated primary care clinics earlier this month, less than 18 months after selecting the system.

It has implemented the majority of the Cerner Millenium solution, including emergency medicine, nursing, pharmacy, radiology, PACS, critical care, patient administration, scheduling, coding, surgery, device integration, orders, results, physician and nursing documentation. T

The system also integrates with ancillary departmental solutions and other systems of the regional government.

Clinicians can document in the EMR, instead of writing notes and submitting orders on paper. They can also directly connect bedside medical devices, such as monitors, ventilators, electrocardiograms and anesthesia towers.

Dr Luis Fidel Campoy Domene, Marina Salud chief executive, said: “Marina Salud chose the Cerner Millennium solution because of its ability to provide clinicians with the information needed to improve patient care on all services points in the healthcare network: hospital, health centers and home care.

“This innovative approach to healthcare delivery overcomes traditional limitations such as data duplicity and information inconsistencies; as well as to serve as a healthcare model to all of Spain.”

Marcos García Navarrete, Cerner Iberia general manager, said: “This relationship reflects Marina Salud and Cerner’s shared vision to improve the healthcare delivery process and create a safer environment for patients.

“With this first-of-its-kind project in Spain, the inhabitants of this region are receiving a level of integrated care which extends beyond the walls of the hospital and was not previously available.”
